STALKING

EXT. CAMPUS COMMON GROUNDS -ROLL ®STUDENTS WALKING

RODNIE WILLIAMS
Over one million women were stalked last year and the most common age for women being stalked is between the ages of 18 and 29.

INT. OFFICE
Interview with Rodnie Williams. Add title.

ON CAMERA - ADD TITLE 'RODNIE WILLIAMS, Certified protection professional, FOUNDER 360 STAY SAFE

RODNIE WILLIAMS
Also interesting to note is that males can be stalked as well and last year 17% of the reported stalking cases were cases where males were actually the victims of the stalking. And another thing to realize about stalking is frequently people think gee, you know this is a relationship that's gone bad or you know her boyfriend weirded out on her or something to that effect, but actually 23% of the people that reported stalking cases were actually stalked by strangers, people that they didn't know.

EXT. CAMPUS COMMON GROUNDS
B-ROLL ®STUDENTS WALKING
Students walking through campus. The camera follows one person, then moves to follow another person. We can't tell who is following whom. The stalkers could be anyone.

RODNIE WILLIAMS (V.O.)
Stalking is when a person intentionally follows or harasses another person and frequently they will also accompany that following or harasses with threats.

ON CAMERA RODNIE WILLIAMS (CONT'D)
Direct threats are pretty easy to spot. Typically, they make a threat of bodily harm or they're going to do something physical to a person or to vandalize your property, but implied threats are a little more subtle...

...the person may be angry. They may be somebody who seems like their only connection to life is you. They may be very and inordinately interested about you and where you're at and who you're with.

ON CAMERA RODNIE WILLIAMS (CONT'D)
Sometimes they really develop an overdependence on you or an over-reliance on you. Other things that could be going on is the person may be following you. They could be harassing you and that harassing could...EXT. outside southwest dorm, stalker questioning roommate

Stalker: Do you think she wants to see me today? Maybe at all?

Roommate: You could call her. You have her number, don't you?

Stalker: Ah no, could you give me her number?

Roommate: Yeah, sure.

EXT. CAMPUS COMMON GROUNDS. GROUP OF STUDENTS GETTING PHOTO TAKEN One student poses a group of 7
students (5 male, 2 female) in a photo. They are diverse. The student taking the photo is a female. When she snaps the photo, the 'photo' becomes the on-screen image.

Photographer: Here, can you move over here? Yeah, go sit on the wall over there. You should come over to the other side. You're tall, so you need to kneel. photographer continues to wrangle other students

CHRISTIANA (V.O.)
Not all stalkers are created equal. They have different needs, and motivations.

Some individuals are very, very egocentric. And they believe that they really are a gift. They are a gift to the human race.

EXT. Photographer taking picture
Photographer: Ready? Smile!

DR. JOHN BURI (V.O.)
And they really do expect that you are going to treat them in the same way and they can't accept the fact...

Some stalkers are quite paranoid. They're afraid that people are out to get them.

...and they believe that you might be against them as well and it's very difficult for them, to be able to handle that reality and therefore, they'll do whatever they can, so that you don't turn against them. It only confirms their paranoid thoughts if you do.

DR. JOHN BURI (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Some stalkers are antisocial.

GRAPHIC - HIGHLIGHT MALE STUDENT #4 - ADD CG 'SOCIOPATH'

DR. JOHN BURI (V.O.) (CONT'D)
They're sociopaths. They have a very poor sense of guilt. Situations where other people would experience guilt or would realize that certain behaviors are inappropriate, they don't. They have a very poor sense of social protocol, and therefore...

One of the first things that you can do is you can ignore the person and ignore their attempts to contact you...

...and you can be clear with them that you don't want to have any involvement with them. If they send you a gift, send it back unopened. She is sorting though her mail_, one piece of which is a large stuffed envelope from her 'stalker'_ (ex-date). She writes 'return to sender' on the envelope.

RODNIE WILLIAMS (V.O.)
If they send you a note or they leave you a voice mail don't return it.

INT. SOUTHWEST RESIDENCE HALL
A female student will be shown in a variety of activities in her room as she 'handles' her stalker's behavior. CO-ED ANSWERS HER CELL PHONE_

CO-ED: Hey Kelly, what's up?

RODNIE WILLIAMS (V.O.)
When you move into an area where they still continue to try to contact you and they still follow you and they're showing up at odd times and they're asking your friends about where you're at and what you're up to, you have to _start to_ take a firmer stance...

CO-ED: He asked you what?! Why does he even care? Like why won't he just leave me alone?

ANGLE ON CO-ED TALKING ON THE PHONE AND PEERING OUT THE WINDOW

CO-ED: Oh! Oh my gosh, he's looking into our window right now. Did you tell him where we live?

RODNIE WILLIAMS (V.O.)
And you're going to have to state unequivocally to this individual...

...and also let them know in, in no uncertain terms that if in fact, they don't stop this behavior that there will be consequences for their actions.

ANGLE ON CO-ED TALKING ON THE PHONE

CO-ED: I should probably call campus safety and security. He won't leave me alone, he's just, he's just looking up my window. How creepy is that?

CO-ED ANSWERS A KNOCK AT THE DOOR. ADD TEXT NEXT TO SCENE 'VARY PATTERNS, CHANGE LOCKS'.

RODNIE WILLIAMS (V.O.) (CONT'D)
...this may involve you changing the locks on your doors, maybe getting a new email address, certainly _maybe_ getting a new phone number.

CAMPUs security officer: Hi, I'm Mike English with Safety and Security.

CO-ED: Hi Mike.

CAMPUS security officer: Can we come in and talk about the stalker?

CO-ED: Yes please do, thank you for coming.

CAMPUS security officer: Okay, no problems.

ADD TEXT NEXT TO SCENE 'ALERT OTHERS'. CO-ED AND SECURITY OFFICER SIFT THROUGH MAIL

RODNIE WILLIAMS (V.O.)
You'll need to alert your family and friends and co-workers about what's happening...

RODNIE WILLIAMS (V.O.)
...and you'll need to be prepared to provide a picture and description of this individual and the circumstances to the campus public safety folks, and potentially the law enforcement people as well.

CO-ED HANDS THE PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICER A STACK OF EMAILS SHE HAS PRINTED OUT.

CO-ED: ...that I printed off. I didn't know if they'll be helpful to you.

CAMPUS security officer: Okay, and what was his name?

CO-ED: and officer discuss emails

RODNIE WILLIAMS (V.O.) (CONT'D)
When you are being stalked and working with _potentially_ campus public safety or law enforcement, one of the things you really need to do is

ADD TEXT NEXT TO SCENE 'SAVE ALL DOCUMENTATION'

RODNIE WILLIAMS (V.O.) (CONT'D)
keep a record of all telephone calls, text messages, emails, voice mails, anything, any attempts at contacting you. ...try to vary your patterns, in maybe how do you go to class or how do you go to work and if you're exercising or you're out and about, try to do that with someone else, so that you're with, with other people and as the old adage goes there is safety in numbers.

ANGLE ON CHRISTIANA - EXTERIOR LOCATION

CHRISTIANA
In some cases, law enforcement may be brought in, and a protection order obtained. That is an extreme example, but safety on campus is your right - as well as your responsibility. Be smart - and be careful.
