PROTECTING YOUR POSSESSIONS AND IDENTITY -

ext. broll students walking

CHRISTIANA (V.O.)
Stealing, burglary and identity theft happen more often than anyone would like. In fact, theft is consistently the most common crime on college campuses.

_STUDENT INTERVIEWS_
FEMALE STUDENT: They hadn't locked their door the night before.
FEMALE STUDENT: My wallet stolen.
FEMALE STUDENT: Somebody came in, that they didn't know.
MALE STUDENT: Tennis shoes.
FEMALE STUDENT: Stole a laptop, an Xbox, and a camera.
FEMALE STUDENT:I lost three I-pods.
FEMALE STUDENT: And he walked right out.
FEMALE STUDENT:I once had my helmet and goggles stolen.
FEMALE STUDENT: And they never caught him.
FEMALE STUDENT: Textbooks are a big thing that gets stolen, that really sucks.
FEMALE STUDENT:I actually had clothing stolen out of the dryer once.
FEMALE STUDENT: My entire wallet stolen, which had credit cards, I.D., passport, money, everything... And I felt absolutely hopeless.
FEMALE STUDENT: And it made me feel like, very suspicious of people.
FEMALE STUDENT: Just trying to figure out who had done it.
MALE STUDENT: So I feel more stupid than anything else.
FEMALE STUDENT: It's just really unfortunate that other people would have to resort to stealing it, when they would most likely feel the same way if theirs was stolen..
FEMALE STUDENT: When you just walk down the street and you see people walk past you, like I wonder if they did it.

CHRISTIANA
You may think that campus crime is committed by seasoned criminals. And you'd be wrong. Campus crime is usually committed by your fellow
students. Stealing, burglary and personal identity theft on campus are usually crimes of opportunity. If it is easy to take - someone takes it.

ADD CG: '80% campus crimes by insiders'

CHRISTIANA (CONT'D)
Statistics show that nearly 80% of campus crimes are committed by members of the college community. And while theft and burglary can occur
anywhere and at anytime, most occur during daylight hours.

CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
This backpack contains textbooks worth hundreds of dollars. If you've marked your textbook in a secret place, you can claim it as your stolen
property if they're recovered.

INT. OLD RESIDENCE HALL OPPORTUNITY THEFT GIRL OR BOY ROOM
Graphic - Ticking clock in lower left corner

CHRISTIANA (V.O.)
In most cases of reported burglary, thieves enter without force. Most thieves stay in a room between 30 and 60 seconds. That's less than the
time it probably takes you to walk down the hall to check on something.

CHRISTIANA NEXT TO OLD RESIDENCE HALL DOOR LEFT UNLOCKED
CU - THE DOOR HAS A SIGN ON IT WHICH READS "SARA, BE BACK 2:30. WAIT FOR ME!"

CHRISTIANA (CONT'D)
Sometimes, we even invite the thief inside. If were to do just one thing to keep your stuff safe, it would be lock your door. She enters the room...

CHRISTIANA (V.O.)
Thieves can even steal your identity - without you knowing it.

GRAPHIC - WHAT IS PHISHING?

FEMALE STUDENT : To get a fish?
MALE STUDENT: I have no idea what phishing would mean with regard to computers, I know how to like fish for fish and stuff.
MALE STUDENT: There's emails that are coming out, trying to get your social security number and all that.
MALE STUDENT: You know like email you pretending to be a certain company, or a certain person from overseas.
MALE STUDENT: Like the dude in Haiti, who needs your account number to route stuff through.
FEMALE STUDENT: Just reply to this email, and we'll reset it for you, but they're not actually working with the company so really they're just looking for your account information.

INT. whiskey river hacker
CHRISTIANA (V.O.)
Phishing is when someone tries to get personal information such as a user name, password or credit card details. It usually starts as an email request.
ON CAMERA CHRISTIANA (outside Cafeteria)
OR, it could be someone posing as the campus IT department, and asking for your password or log-in information.

GRAPHIC - WHAT IS PHARMING?
FEMALE STUDENT: I'm terrible at computers, but I don't think it's a good thing.
MALE STUDENT: I've never heard of pharming either, sorry.
FEMALE STUDENT: I think of agriculture.
MALE STUDENT: Pharming, I do not know what pharming is.
FEMALE STUDENT: That sounds sketchy.

CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Pharming is when someone tries to get personal or private information, usually financial, by setting up a website that pretends to be legitimate.

GRAPHIC - WHAT IS HACKING?
FEMALE STUDENT: That's when someone gets in to your computer that you don't want in your computer.
FEMALE STUDENT: And then getting their like Visa card number or something, stealing.
MALE STUDENT: Get through a firewall, so you can access someone else's information.
FEMALE STUDENT: Someone gets into something that they shouldn't be, usually of confidentiality.

STUDENT ALONE IN A CORNER_ ON A LAPTOP_ WITH EMPTY CAFFEINATED BEVERAGES_ AROUND HIM
CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Hacking is when someone changes a computer program by changing the code itself. Sometimes they do it for the thrill. Other times it is malicious. Simply put, it is someone on a computer who does not belong there.

GRAPHIC - WHAT IS DUMPSTER DIVING?
MALE STUDENT: I've never heard of dumpster diving, to be honest.
FEMALE STUDENT:I personally went dumpster diving for a futon at the end of last year.
MALE STUDENT: Dumpster diving I think is where somebody digs through your trash in order to find personal information, whether it's your social security number, or you know credit card numbers, or anything like that.

A _DUMPSTER DIVING STUDENT_ LOOKS AROUND, THEN REACHES INTO A WASTE PAPER BASKET_ AND PULLS OUT [A CREDIT CARD STATEMENT_?]

CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Dumpster diving is just what it sounds like. Someone going through a campus dumpster or wastebasket looking for credit card bills or bank statements.

GRAPHIC - WHAT IS SHOULDER SURFING?
FEMALE STUDENT : Someone looking over your shoulder, while you're on the internet?
FEMALE STUDENT: If they're doing online shopping.
MALE STUDENT: When they're doing like passwords or account numbers, I think.
FEMALE STUDENT: I have no idea.
MALE STUDENT: Looking over someone’s shoulder as they type passwords, perhaps?
FEMALE STUDENT: I have no idea what shoulder surfing is.

STUDENT BUYING SOMETHING ONLINE_ WHILE ANOTHER _STUDENT PEERS OVER SHOULDER
CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Shoulder surfing is when someone looks directly at your screen to obtain information. They could be getting your PIN at a bank ATM, or your credit card information during your shopping cart check-out.

GRAPHIC - WHAT IS SOCIAL ENGINEERING?
A _WHISKEY RIVER STUDENT/hacker_ IS TYPING ON HIS LAPTOP_ IN A NON-CAMPUS LOCATION

CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Social engineering is when someone cons someone else into revealing secure information to gain access to an organization's or company's website or database. It works because people are innately trusting, and can be tricked into being helpful.

INT. OLD RESIDENCE HALL CHRISTIANA IN A COMMON AREA WITH STUDENT.

CHRISTIANA
It's unrealistic to think that students won't have social networking pages or buy products and services online. But you can be smart about it.

GRAPHICS_Visuals of a variety of myspace / facebook pages with pertinent details 'grayed' or fuzzed out. Highlight the rights and wrongs as mentioned.

HIGHLIGHT THE REAL NAME, REAL PHONE NUMBER AND REAL JOB LOCATION ON PHONY PROFILE PAGE

CHRISTIANA (V.O.)
Avoid using your full real name, your real address and your real job location. Your friends can find you, but so can a stalker. And NEVER post your date of birth, social security number or driver's license number.

HIGHLIGHT THE CHAT AREA CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Also - don't chat or IM with anyone you don't know in real life.

HIGHLIGHT A LAND LINE PHONE NUMBER, IM SCREEN NAME, EMAIL ADDRESS, BLOG ADDRESS CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Don't post your land line phone number because reverse look-up is way too
easy. For that matter, don't post your email or blog addresses either.

ADD CG 'use U.S. Postal service'

CHRISTIANA (CONT'D)
and use an official U.S. Postal service mailbox. Here's a few other suggestions to protect your possessions and your identity:

If you have a bike, register it with Campus Public Safety. Also, invest in a cut resistant lock and use it.

CAR PARKED PARKING LOT - female student entersADD CG 'always lock car doors'

CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
If you have a car on campus, keep it locked, and parked in a well-lit, patrolled area. Don't leave valuables in plain sight. Either put them in the trunk, or take them with you.

STUDENT ON CELL PHONE WITH BACKPACK ZIPPED AND CLOSE BY ADD CG 'guard possessions at all times'

CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
And no matter where you are on campus, guard your personal belongings as though you were at an airport.

CHRISTIANA
That means keeping your zippers zipped, snaps snapped, eyes and ears open. It's impossible to keep your possessions 100% safe, 100% of the time - but if you follow these safety tips, you've got a better shot at it.
