an eye on our baggage when we're at the airport. But did you know that
our trusting nature is exactly what con artists depend upon when you're
in the unsecured areas of the airport?

Many people have their laptops stolen or purses or backpacks, when
they're going through security checkpoints and the typical scam that
will occur in situations like this is that right when you placed your
bags on the conveyor belt and you're ready to walk through the metal
detector, someone will cut in line in front of you and that person who
cuts in line in front of you, actually has a bunch of metal in their
pockets, which of course sets off the alarms.

At the same time, your bags have already moved through the x-ray machine
or are now on the other side, where this person's partner will pickup a
laptop

or pickup your belongings, a purse or what have you and make off with it, before you actually get through the checkpoint.

Somebody tries to cut in front of you, don't let them do that. If in
fact, they succeed in doing so, make sure that you draw a lot of
attention to the fact that somebody's trying to take your bag or that
you want somebody to watch your bag, until you can actually get through
the security checkpoint.

We always encourage people grab your belongings, get them close to you,
get somewhere, where you can put on your shoes and pay attention to
what's going on, so somebody can't pickup your bag, either on purpose or
inadvertently.

When you take a cab or shuttle from the airport, don't 'freelance' it
and take someone who approaches you outside. Take a cab from the taxi
cab line. People may take advantage of you if they know you're new to
the area.

If a cabbie asks 'is this your first time to New York?' you should feel free to say 'no'.

And if you take the bus, sit up front near the bus driver.

If you're traveling alone, and are assigned a room on the first floor,
ask for a new room assignment. Although not an easy task, breaking in to
a first floor room through the windows is possible.

If the hotel staff mentions your room number, or hints that you're
traveling alone, ask for a new room number. ANGLE ON THE FRONT DESK.

When you get on an elevator, if you are nervous for any reason, trust
your instincts and don't reveal your room assignment location.

Every hotel should have sprinklers - so look for them.

And count the doors from your room to the nearest exit. If there is a
fire, you may be crawling on the floor to get out, and will need to know
how far to crawl to the nearest exit. Remembering 'five to the right'
or 'two to the left' could save your life.

Obviously you should not open your hotel room door for anyone unless you
asked them to come to your room. If they say 'room service' and you
didn't ask for room service, then do not open the door.

Often the hotel workout room is on a lower level, away from traffic. If
this is the case, use the workout room during busy times. Remember that
there is safety in numbers.

One last tip, hotels and motels have safes - either behind the reception desk, or in the room.

Use the safe for anything you want to leave in the room, but would have a
hard time replacing such as a passport, jewelry, or small electronics.
If you follow these safe travel tips, and remember to trust your
instincts and be aware of your surroundings, you can be one of the
majority of college students who travel and arrive at their destination
safely.
