A campus is a very busy place. Students are studying - working part time
jobs - socializing. Keeping yourself safe is a full circle, 360 degree,
24/7 activity. Staying Safe is largely about taking precautions.

MALE STUDENT
I always lock up my room whenever I'm not in it. And I have a special
lock for my computer. In case that gets, so that doesn't get stolen.
MALE STUDENT
There's usually one person in the dorm at any given time. If there's no
one there, the door's always locked. So basically the door's always
locked. If I have anything out, I usually try to keep my eyes on it,
like Ipod, graphic calculator, textbooks, etcetera, etcetera.
FEMALE STUDENT
And I usually bring my computer with me, because that's the most expensive thing I own. Or my phone or my Ipod.
MALE STUDENT
I don't bring a lot of money, I only bring the money that I think I'm gonna need, and never too much.
FEMALE STUDENT
My cell phone is always on me, in my pocket and everything else is back in the dorm.
FEMALE STUDENT
We lock our door, so nothing gets stolen out of our room.
MALE STUDENT
When I'm sleeping too, at night, I also lock it. I lock the door.
MALE STUDENT
Well, this is something my grandma talked to me alot, we have a paper
shredder. So just make sure you, I got like a handy paper shredder, so I
just use that all the time, any time I throw anything away.
FEMALE STUDENT
You take the shreds, and I throw them in different garbages around the
house or the campus. Make sure part of it goes in one week, one another
week, so.
MALE STUDENT
If you are taking stuff out, always keep an eye on it, or just have a
friend have an eye on it, like don't just leave all your stuff alone at
the lunch table.
FEMALE STUDENT
Now to protect my Ipods, I keep them on my body, or I will leave them locked in my room.

Keeping my purse with me.

In order to protect my backpack, I usually keep it on me, or in sight.
MALE STUDENT
I guess I try to use my personal computer, and you know, have anti virus
and spyware protection on my computer, so I don't get hacked or
anything like that. And I don't let people that I don't know use my
computer.
MALE STUDENT
Yeah, when you're protecting your stuff, just lock it up, take it with you, that's just the gist of it.

Don't post notes on your door telling everyone where you are. You're
letting your friends know how to find you - but letting a stranger have
the same information.

Let's say for example you're walking into your dormitory and somebody
follows you in, tailgates behind you and they don't have a card, to get
into the building and then they start to tell you, well I was coming
over here to see my friend and he lives up on the third floor and I
forgot my cell phone and they keep going...

...on and on and on and they are giving you way too many details about
the situation, much more than you would need, that should give you an
indication that maybe they have an ulterior motive of some sort.

Call Campus Public Safety and give them a detailed description of the individual.

When you're away from your dorm, you're away from your comfort zone,
which is good because you should be instinctively a bit more cautious.

When you're walking to your car, have your keys ready. If you're digging in your back pack, your purse, or your pocket,

These simple actions will allow you to only stop for gas when you want
to - you won't have to stop late at night, or unexpectedly when you're
in a bad situation.

Keep your doors locked, and drive with your windows two-thirds of the
way rolled up, so no one can reach in to open the door. When you're
driving with a friend and you drop them off at their house, wait until
they're safely inside before you leave. And when you park your car,
always lock it with the windows rolled up.

If you're driving in your car and somebody is following you, the very first thing that you...

Should do is call 911. Take a look around and see street signs or
landmarks, so that you can actually tell the police where you are, so
that they can come and help you. The other thing is, is if you don't
have a phone in your vehicle at the time, what you don't want to do is
stop. You need to continue to drive, turn on your hazard lights, honk
your horn and go to a well lite area that has lots of people around.

will pull over in front of the stranded car_ and have a brief
conversation with the other driver.

When you're driving _down the road_ and you see somebody that needs
help, our natural tendency is to want to pullover and help that
individual out, but lots of times this can be a problem, and can lead to
a very compromising situation. If you do decide to pullover, when you
pull in front of the vehicle, lower your window just enough so that you
can talk to the individual.
Female student: ...need some help?
Male motorist: Yeah, I've been having some car trouble. Do you think I could have you could give
me a ride.
Female student: Can I call 911 for you?

Keep your vehicle running and make sure _again_ that there are no
obstacles in your way, so that you can pull away quickly if you need to.
Let the individual know that you'll call for help and then pull off and
don't feel guilty. You never really know who the person is on, on the
other side.

When walking, you should be just as vigilant. Know where your escape
routes would be. Keep your eyes and ears open when walking or jogging
alone. This means no headphones, iPod or cell phones which not only
distract you, but help make you an easy target. Be aware of your
surroundings: this means people - as well as buildings or landscaping
which could hide a predator.

Walk in a group or with at least one other person whenever possible.

Be prepared to cross the street to keep distance between you and
suspicious people. And don't be afraid of hurting someone's feelings.

When I walk around campus, especially late at night, I walk with a sense
of urgency. It's kind of a funny thing that my girlfriends and I say to
ourselves, but that really is what we're talking about. And so, walking
with a sense of urgency is knowing where you're going, knowing how to
get there, and walking fast with your head up, with your, you know your
back straight, your head up and you just walk with a sense of urgency,
like you have somewhere to go and no one is going to stop you from
getting there.

services into your cell phone. Know where campus emergency call boxes
are located. And know which paths are best-lit after dark. But what
about when you're off campus?

When you're off-campus and in any new location, find three exits so you
have several options for leaving. Just like when you went swimming as a
kid, don't jump into the off-campus pool with out buddying up.
